JAZZ SMUGGLERS BAND PLAYED TO OVER 3,000 PEOPLE  

Being the keynote jazz band at the Chichester Jazz Festival was the highlight of the Summer for us. We had a wonder ful time, and 300 turned up to hear us that Saturday afternoon.

 

Othere highlights were Priory Park Chichester, Hotham park bandstand Bognor, a lovely evening with the Bosham Association, a few plush weddings, amongst similar functions, anniversaries and private parties

 

Clients have a list of 60 songs from which they can choose. Mostly jazz standards, and show songs - the favourite songs from brilliant composers such as Duke Ellington, Jerome Kern, Richard Rodgers, Miles Davis, Cole Porter. These are the songs which people know from the past, with beautiful melodies.

 

Mostly the line up consists of two or three saxes, guitar, bass, drums and piano and a wonderful singer.When just background music is needed then we reduce the size of the band to a quintet.

Bernie's tune This song was made famous by the Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker quartet. The tenor starts the solos, the Coda surprises

Blue bossa This song made Joe Henderson famous amongst jazz enthusiasts. We put in a final 16 bar session where the band all jam

Funkaleroo Bill Evans wrote this song, and our version uses front line harmonies behind the melody. No root notes on the piano chords

Perdido Duke Ellington never heard his song played as a Ska with the bridge in swing. Short phrases made it perfect for bebop players.

Black Coffee Some great blues guitar playing by Steve backs this vocal by Anne. Sad song, but a classic

Summertime We start with a languid tenor solo by Andrew, then we double the tempo finishing fast. Bass and drums exchange 4's.

Ladybird Tad Dameron wrote a number of classics for jazz, all of them sounding happy. Listen for the harmonies in the front line and the bass solo

All blues 3/4 Miles Davis jazz standard. Our song notes drums 4 bars, guitar bar 9, ensemble bar 17, coda extra 4 bars leaving horns.

Autumn leaves The descending minor chords make this French song sound sad, but it is beautiful. Listen for the fills by soprano sax

Little sunflower Lovely little modal song, only three chords.  We have a hypnotic bass and hormonise around the second A section

Watermelon man Herbie Hancock. A 4 bar bass intro, and a 4 bar piano riff and a jazz funk feel. We stop on the final break  - different.

Anything goes A happy Cole Porter song with wonderful cheeky lyrics sung by Anne. Adam sounds nice on clarinet - lovely solo

Danny Lovely rythmic original by Steve, our guitar player who also sings the song

Love for Sale Wonderful old Cole Porter song. We’ve added a Stevie Wonder riff to the Latin and Swing. Works well, well we think so.
